Better sounding pull or push off / Banjo Advice BanjoTeacher.com

A featured email question from a student and answer by me, or some advice I have given someone who has requested it.
Listed by date. Many of the questions I receive are questions that many students learning the banjo have. I hope the answers and advice I share ring through as sensible to you.

Question: How to get better sound out of my pushoff?

Couple of quick tips on pull-off and push-offs/Ross Nickerson

-Pick the string harder, 30% harder at least at first to get the hang of it.

-Place the index finger on the 2nd fret before pulling or pushing... and leave it there for at least a quarter beat after you pull or push.. don't make it all one motion and let your index just fly off the fret board after you pull or push with the middle finger

Pull or push abruptly, flick it.

Thanks again,
Sincerely,
Ross Nickerson
