What is the definition of playing thirds on a banjo

Hi Ross what is the definition of playing a third on a banjo? Looked but couldn’t find the definition, Thanks Ted

Hi Ted,

A Third is two notes 1/3 apart; chords are made of 3 notes, each note 1/3 apart which is why they harmonize. Singers most often harmonize using notes 1/3 apart.

The 3rd 2nd and 1st string on a banjo are the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of the G scale which make the G chord. Notes are G, B, and D

The 3rd and 2nd string are a 1/3 apart and the 2nd and 1st string are a 1/3 apart,

The 3rd and 1st string are a 1/5 apart

Hope that helps, thanks, Ross

 Thanks again,

Sincerely,

Ross Nickerson
