A good alternative beginner banjo is the  Gold Tone AC-1 or Goldtone AC-5

Take advantage of the significant drop in price for the Morgan Monroe Open Back Beginner Banjo RT-B01-OP. We set these up and they are a good banjo to learn on. With this low price they are a very affordable alternative to someone who wants to learn but doesn't have a lot of money to spend. The $139 price still includes FREE shipping, FREE case, and FREE 1 year online access to our lesson site.

This is the same banjo as the RT B01 only without the closed back resonator. Getting the open back version saves you money and they still sound good. The beginner kit comes with a strap which you will help balance the neck which needs more support without the weight of the resonator to help balance it. Although the RT B01 with resonator needs a strap to balance the neck as well but just not as much as the open back needs it. Only the heavier bluegrass banjos have enough weight to use without a banjo strap while sitting.

The open back banjos are normally used for clawhammer and old time or folk styles but they work as well as a lightweight banjo to play and learn bluegrass on. It's a 5-string and that's what counts most for both styles.
