Ross Nickerson Banjo Workshops

Ross Nickerson Banjo Camps and Workshops

Ross has been helping banjo students of all levels and backgrounds with private banjo lessons and seminars for 40 years. He has held group workshops in the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia.

Ross Nickerson's Banjo Camps and workshops focus on learning to play banjo by ear, jamming with others, learning more about using chords and chord progressions, basic improvising and learning to play without tablature. Ross specializes in breaking down the many common obstacles unique to learning 5-string bluegrass banjo into simple, practical terms. Ross really takes aim at the subjects that are hard to learn from books no matter how comprehensive the book and aspects of the banjo learning process that he knows are often missed in private banjo lessons.

There are many other topics covered including exercises and drills, picking, timing, memorizing with muscle memory, practice habits, developing , jamming skills, and banjo backup!

This workshop will be ideal for intermediate students who need to raise their skill level and get more direction. Beginners can come and take notes and should come away from the workshop inspired with a much clearer understanding of what needs to be done. Ross will find ways to challenge more advanced players and make sure they come away with some new understanding, licks and tips.

Space is limited, please register early to reserve your spot!
Playing by Ear, Learning to Play with Others and Jam, Skill Building, Reducing Dependency on Banjo Tablature, Banjo Practice Habits and covering other common challenges in the Banjo learning process.

The workshops are for beginner and intermediate banjo players.

Student comments and testimonials on what they learned at Ross's 5-string banjo bluegrass workshops

.....I was at the Midwest Banjo Camp - Lansing, MI, last June and watched you play banjo on Saturday evening. You play amazingly well. My daughter
and I had never seen anyone play a banjo so cleanly and with such speed before. You are really a gifted artist
.
.......I learned more from you at your clinic than I did at the two other clinics I've attended combined! That you are the best instructor around was reinforced after meeting you in person

Student comments and testimonials on what they learned at Ross's 5-string banjo bluegrass workshops

Ross Nickerson workshops are designed to target the part of the banjo learning process that is hard to learn from books, private lessons and other ways of "teaching yourself". Throughout his many years of experience giving private lessons, writing books, recording DVDs and traveling to give workshops, Ross has developed a firm grasp on the difficulties students face moving forward. Ross works with students on creating good habits in practice, building the skills needed to play songs, how to play with others, the most important areas of focus while simplifying the process overall for students.

Student comments on what they learned at Ross's 5-string banjo bluegrass workshops

...... Despite knowing of your reputation, and having attended last year’s clinic here in Somerset, I was very gratefully impressed with how much I was able to take away from this year’s lessons. You have a tremendous ability to pinpoint weak areas, but, more importantly, you were able to offer multiple suggestions to address problem areas. You were able to seamlessly integrate basics like picking technique, rolls, and chords with more advanced techniques in backup, playing leads from chords, and ways to relieve my malignant stage fright.
It must be difficult to critique adults who have made the banjo such an important part of their lives. However, I never felt you were patronizing with your comments and corrections, and your admonishment to “push myself” mechanically and musically was exactly what I needed. After our session I had a renewed zeal for practice, with multiple tools and techniques to advance. I haven’t been this excited about practicing and playing in a very long time. I have been to other online instructional sites and various clinics and I am 100% convinced that your site and your personal instruction are the best out there. I would most strongly encourage anyone interested in playing (or in advancing their skill on) the banjo to take advantage of the multiple tools available through your web site and/or to attend one of your clinics. Nothing comes close to the “return on the dollar” they will get from your various teaching methods. ....... On a more personal note, I can play Salt Creek down the neck from rolls and chord changes alone. Doing the same up the neck is a little harder. I have been practicing your suggestions to overcome stage fright, and I will test them at tomorrow night’s performance. I am signing up for the instructional cruise as soon as I finish this and look forward to seeing you then. Many thanks again for all that you have done to help get more enjoyment from the banjo.
