Best Bluegrass Banjo Strings
I really like GHS strings, they work great and they have the best custom sets available for banjo. More professional banjo players use GHS than any other brand of banjo strings.
The GHS PF 150's is a good middle of the road set and what I recommend if you're not sure what to get.
That is the set we include with our Beginner Banjo Packages.
I really like the PF 175's and have used those for many years. Lately I've been using the PF 135's on one of my banjos which is a lighter set. Those are the gauges that Deering uses on their banjos from the factory.
All of the other sets also have intelligent gauge selections depending on what you want. The 185's are nice medium light set in between too and I know several pro banjo players that like those. The 160's and 180's are the heavier strings if you prefer those.
Lighter gauges are brighter and sustain longer, heavy are the opposite and medium light is in between.
In my experience lighter gauges wear out quicker and can be a problem if you are just learning and are having a tendency to push down too hard on the strings. Light gauges are easier to push or squeeze out of tune. That is why I recommend medium light sets if you're not sure.
BUT, this is all personal preference and its worth it to try a few sets and find out what works best for you.

I use GHS more than any other brand. I'm fond of the 135 set but all that I've tried were very good. The cover about any gauge you could want. always really good quality and break in very well. They last as expected depending on use and stay in tune very well. hard to beat and the price is right.
