These custom-gauge slightly heavier strings work great for bringing out the warm tones of a Banjola, Dojo, other wood alternative banjos and for lower open 5-string banjo tunings like Open E or Open F. The lower open banjo tunings the John Hartford made popular.
The Gold Tone Banjola, Dojo and other wood or resophonic banjo alternatives sound better with slightly heavier strings. It puts more tension the bridge bringing out more volume and deeper tone.These custom gauge heavier strings also are ideal for tuning a 5-string banjo lower to Open E or Open F tuning. In order to get the rich mellow sound by tuning your banjo lower to open E or F you need heavier gauge strings. Otherwise the strings will be loose and sloppy with the less tension needed for the lower open tunings.
