Adding 5th String Capo Spikes

We install  five string banjo 5th string capo spikes to Goldtone Banjos before shipping on request. This is a low cost way to get it done ahead of time so you won't have to later track someone down in your local area to install them. On a 5 string banjo whenever you put a capo on you also have to capo the 5th string. If you are brand new to banjo you may not use a capo right away but you will eventually be using one and if the spikes are installed now before the banjo is shipped you'll be ready. More experienced players will for sure want these installed at the factory.

...Sometimes these capo spikes are called railroad tacks or railroad spikes. That is because the are actually railroad spikes from HO train sets. An unknown person came up with this idea likely about 30 years ago and it is by far the most common and in my opinion that best way to capo the 5th string on a 5 string banjo. This eliminates having to drill screw holes in the top of the neck to install a sliding capo, not to mention those can get in the way when using your thumb on the 5th string. Ross Nickerson

What frets do I choose?

We install the spikes at the 7th, 9th, and 10th frets for capoing the fifth string
for the keys of A, B and C
Choose this option if you are not sure, this is the most common.

We place 5th string capo spikes on the 7th, 8th and 9th frets for capoing the fifth string in the keys of A, Bb and B
This is for more advanced players who do not use a capo for playing banjo in the key of C
